Red chickens new force in football fandom
새로운 축구팬 클럽으로 등장한 붉은 닭
South Koreans might remember their hearts throbbing when the “Red Devils,” the nations’ largest soccer fan club, *unleashed their drum-pounding, ear-splitting and slogan-chanting during *the Korea-Japan World Cup finals in 2002.
This year, a new cheer squad called the “Red Chickens,’’ *is set to whip fans into an even greater frenzy in support of the national team at the games in Germany.
The new soccer support squad was a predecessor of a group called “Daksamo,’’ or *a Korean acronym for “People Who Love Chickens,’’ which began in 2002.
It was strongly motivated to *turn itself into a fan club since it gave chicken products to Park Ji-sung, South Korean soccer player of Manchester United, during the 2002 World Cup.
The squad has vowed to bring a new cheer culture to the festivals during the soccer games which were *initiated and flared by the Red Devils four years ago.
Lee Doo-ho, 29, head of the new squad, said that the new soccer supporters are getting ready to transform the upcoming World Cup games into a different kind of festival.
“Originally our supporters were created as a social club for those who love to eat chicken, but now we want to *jump on the bandwagon for supporting the national soccer team, along with the Red Devils,’’ Lee said.
Lee *questioned the integrity of the Red Devils as it has deteriorated from a pure soccer fan club to a commercially motivated one.
KTF, the second-largest mobile service provider in South Korea, recently signed a sponsorship with the Red Devils. It is the first time for a local company to sign a sponsorship agreement with a group of sports fans.
However, the new squad is *likely to trigger controversy over its political motivation as Lee is currently working as a senior assistant of Rep. Lee Jae-oh of the opposition Grand National Party, who serves as *his party’s floor leader at the National Assembly.
He argued that he has operated the club for chicken lovers before starting his work as the lawmaker’s assistant, *dismissing the possibility of political intentions in the running of the new soccer support squad.
In his recent Web blog, he said that his squad is expected to serve as a new festival organizer, in which many South Koreans can enjoy and support the national team, rather than a counter-team against the Red Devils.

새 축구 응원단은 2002년에 발족한 "닭 요리를 사랑하는 사람들”의 한국어 약칭인 "닭사모"의 전신이다.
닭사모는 맨체스터 유나이티드의 한국인 축구 선수인 박지성에게 2002 월드컵기간 동안 닭요리를 공급한 이후 팬클럽으로 변신하게 된 것이다.
붉은 닭 응원단은 4년 전 붉은 악마에 의해 시작되면서 불 붙은 월드컵 응원에 더욱 새로운 응원 문화를 세울 것을 다짐하였다.
새 응원단 대표인 이두호 씨는 이 새로운 축구응원단이 다가오는 월드컵 축구경기동안 다른 종류의 축제로 변모시킬 준비를 하고 있다고 말했다.
"원래 우리 응원단은 닭 요리를 즐겨먹는 사람들의 사회적인 단체로 만들어졌지만, 이제 우리는 붉은 악마와 함께 국가대표 축구팀을 지원하기 위한 응원단으로 도약하기를 원합니다,"고 이 대표는 말했다.
이 대표는 붉은 악마가 상업적 목적의 단체로 변하면서 순수한 축구 팬클럽을 오염시켰기 때문에 붉은 악마의 순수성에 의문을 가졌다.
국내에서 두 번째로 큰 이동통신업체인 KTF는 최근 붉은 악마와 후원계약을 맺었다. 국내 기업이 스포츠 팬클럽과 후원계약을 맺은 것은 이번이 처음이다.
그러나 새 응원단은 정치적인 논쟁을 불러일으킬 것으로 보이는데 그 이유는 이 씨가 한나라당의 원내총무인 이재오 의원의 선임보좌관으로 근무하고 있기 때문이다.
그는 의원보좌관을 하기 전부터 닭고기 애호가 클럽을 운영해왔다고 주장하면서, 새로운 축구응원단의 정치적 의도의 가능성을 일축했다.
그의 최근의 웹 블로그에서 그의 축구 응원단인 붉은 닭은 붉은 악마와 경쟁하는 것이 아니라 많은 한국인들이 국가대표팀을 지원하고 즐기는 새로운 축제주관단체가 될 것을 기대한다고 말했다.
